Description
This enormous Yellow-orange Fly Agaric mushroom was left undisturbed among the fall groundcover at the Skunk-Foster State Natural Area. Heavy rains in late September produced an abundance of fungi and darkened autumnal decay to provide a wonderful showcase for this older toxic mushroom, which favors growing under spruce, pine, birch, poplar, and oak. My sojourn into Skunk-Foster was for fall foliage but this specimen caught my eye. It was a challenge to position my tripod low enough and at an angle to capture a dramatic profile showing its cap, gills, and stem. After experimenting with various angles and heights, I decided on this composition. This is yet another example of the beauty of woodland decay, the natural regeneration of life from death, and the lesson it exemplifies for nature lovers.
