A minimal autumn breeze whispered through the leaves as I approached Grenlie Lake in Skunk-Foster State Natural Area. My lens focused on the beaver lodge, a silent testament to nature's architectural prowess. The lodge, adorned with sticks and branches, stood proudly against the lake's shoreline weeds. Capturing the essence of this beaver colony's haven, I marveled at the intricate construction — rock, mud, in addition to the sticks and branches and a submerged entrance. It wasn't just a home; it was a sanctuary. In winter, the lodge shielded the beavers from the howling winds and year-round lurking predators like wolves. As I framed this scene, I felt a profound connection to the cycle of life, realizing that even in their vulnerability, these creatures crafted a fortress for survival. This photograph freezes the moment in time — a testament to the beavers' resilience and its architectural prowess amid the fall splendor of the natural area.
